Is Seafarer Press a cottage industry?
One might say that. For several years it was located in an Arts and Crafts house, so we called it a "bungalow industry." It is now located in a Garrison Colonial house, so your guess is as good as ours.
Where did the name Seafarer Press come from? Why isn't the publishing company named after the composer?
All of Elizabeth Alexander's names and family names already happen to be names of rather established publishing companies: Alexandrian, Elizabethan and Collins were already taken. (Her husband's last name is Harper, that doesn't help much either!) The seed of the name "Seafarer Press" comes from the composer's initials: S.E.A.
But beyond this "initial" reason, there are many auspicious aspects to the name of Seafarer Press. For starters, the expressions "setting out to sea," and "being lost at sea," pretty much sum up the experience of starting a business. In addition, "fare" means "to go or travel" (as in "Fare thee well"), and moving into the role of publisher has certainly been a journey!
Is composer Elizabeth Alexander also a famous poet?
Although composer Elizabeth Alexander (b. 1962, Chester, SC) occasionally writes or adapts the lyrics to her songs, she is not the same Elizabeth Alexander (b. 1962, Harlem, NY) who read her exquisite poetry at the inauguration of Barack Obama. However, the composer sends her hearty congratulations to this gifted poet, as well as to our deserving president. (For information about the poet Elizabeth Alexander, you'll want to go to )
