Infant Holy, Infant Lowly (Polish carol, additional lyrics by Elizabeth Alexander)

SSA a cappella - SEA-020-00 - $1.00/copy
3 minutes - ME

The simple beauty of this Polish carol has always made it one of my own favorite Christmas carols. In this arrangement, the lower two voices are the gems, with gently winding melodies shapes and poignant suspensions. An original third verse sings of "love's pure light," which arrives with all births, in modern as well as in ancient times.

Infant Holy, Infant Lowly - score
Infant Holy, Infant Lowly Polish folk carol, arranged by Elizabeth Alexander
vs. 1. and 2. translation and paraphrasing by Edith M. G. Reed
vs. 3. by Elizabeth Alexander

Infant holy, infant lowly,
For his bed a cattle stall.
Oxen lowing, Little knowing,
Christ the babe is Lord of all.
Swift are winging, angels singing,
Noels ringing, Tidings bringing,
Christ the babe is Lord of all.

Flocks were sleeping, Shepherds keeping
Vigil 'til the morning new.
Saw the glory, Heard the story
Tidings of a gospels true.
Thus rejoicing, Free from sorrow,
Praises voicing, Greet the morrow,
Christ the babe was born for you.

Poor and wealthy, Sick and healthy,
Babes are born each day and night.
In a stable like the fable,
Or on bedding clean and bright.
New hearts beating, Old hearts warming,
Blessed greeting all-transforming,
Every birth brings love's pure light.
