10 minutes

"Interior Music" takes its inspiration from two expressions of "music" that our bodies create simply by being alive: heartbeats and breaths.  This colorful 10-minute work alternates between music with a steady pulse and music driven by gestures and waves of sound - by turns determined, playful and luminous.

(The fourth movement, a scherzo entitled "...behind the ribcage, the gears that won't give up," may be performed separately.)

Interior Music Music by Elizabeth Alexander
Poetry by Patricia Goedicke, Nancy White, Nancy Cox, and Neal Bowers

I.
...in the familiar fields
of the head
the interior music, waking
collects itself into small fluent eddies
piled up against the fence of morning.

II.
Big as a knee socket,
this mare-muzzle, jittery as the
kitchen timer, it mambas the blue
volts through my body.

Nancy White, from "The Heart is a Muscle"
Published in Sun, Moon, Salt (Word Works) Reprinted by permission of Nancy White & The Word Works.

III.
You are the vibrating instrument:
all those resonant spaces
to fill in your head,
all your bones humming and buzzing...

Nancy Cox, from "Singing Alone"
Published in Mixed Voices (Milkweed Press) Reprinted by permission of Nancy Cox.

IV.
Another day of small engines running--
in the icebox, behind the ribcage--
the gears that won't give up,
and the tiny valves.

Neal Bowers, from "The Message"
Published in Night Vision (Bookmark Press) Reprinted by permission of Neal Bowers.

V.
As sleep slowly winds down
the heavy grooves keep turning
languidly on the pillow

and what symphony has been conducting itself here
or quartet, or jazz solo
